Synopsis

“If we are single at 40, let's get married.”

That's the pact Janice should have had with Ben, her best friend since high school. But she didn't because he was her best friend, and only her best friend. Honestly. Yeah, she thought he was sexy, he always made her laugh, and she could count on him for just about anything. But dating him? That was never a thought that crossed her mind.

Ben tried rekindling his love with his ex-girlfriend, after years of being apart.

She was beautiful, had a caring spirit, and was familiar. Oh, and she was the mother to his fourteen-year-old daughter. Trying with her wasn't right though. It didn't take long for him to realize, everything that was wrong with his ex, was right with Janice.

But when he admits that to Janice, will she forego their friendship, in favor of more?

“Amarya here?”

I shook my head.

“Good.”

My eyes narrowed as I watched her, not knowing what to say first.

“Because I don’t want her to hear the curse words that are about to leave my mouth.”

My eyes widened.

“Curse words?” I asked with a slight smile.

“Yes, motherfucker, because what the fuck was that shit that you did this morning?”

My mouth was left open slightly as I watched her head wag. Janice mad was an entirely different Janice.

“You mad?” I asked, trying to contain my laugh.

“Hell yeah, I’m mad. Were you serious?” Her hand was on her hip, and her eyes blinked. It was my time. Time to tell her I was joking.

But instead of saying that, I challenged her, “What would you say if I was serious?”

She laughed, slapping my arm. “Ben, get the fuck out of here. We’ve been close for years. I know everything about you,” she mumbled. “You know everything about me.” Her head tilted to the side. “There’s no way you think of me in any other way than just a friend.” But as if she was recognizing something that was revealing itself to me, she whispered, “Right?”
